Arrests of officials suspected of corruption continue in Turkmenistan

The agency which was set up in early June to fight economic crimes started its activities with arrests of public officials in the provinces.

Sources at “Chronicles of Turkmenistan” report that 11 individuals, including employees of khyakimliks’ offices, bank staff and a Public Prosecutor official were arrested in Lebap velatyat last week.

15 public sector employees were arrested in Dashoguz velayat. Charges in connection with the cases, which date back to two or three years ago, have been brought against the majority of detainees.

In an attempt to demonstrate efficiency of the newly-established agency, its executives demonstrate ostentatious zealousness. This has resulted in conflicts since the officials, facing criminal prosecution, are linked to all responsible officials in Ashgabat who get a share of “income” from them.

Let us recall that after large-scale cleansing campaign in the government launched on 12 May, Turkmenistan has been combatting corruption at all levels.
