Ashgabat state-run stores refuse to sell groceries to females from other provinces

Correspondents of “Chronicles of Turkmenistan” report that on 12 November, 2019 shop assistants of the state-run stores “Karakum” located in the 30th residential district of Ashgabat, refused to serve female employees of the municipal public utilities service as the women failed to present the Ashgabat residence registration and certificates from the house administrations.

One of the women is a native of Dashoguz velayat whereas the other comes from Turkmenabad.

— There are no jobs in the provinces. Here we are semi-legally employed in the state-run organization. We are renting an apartment in the capital and are often urged to pay bribes to inspectors.

For this reason we are trying to save on food by buying groceries in the state-run retail outlets. Now we have been deprived of this opportunity, one of the women said.

The queues in front of the stores are formed when groceries in short supply, including flour, bread, eggs and oil, are sold. As a rule, police officers keep vigil near the state-run stores.

“Chronicles of Turkmenistan” has previously reported that unemployed residents are reselling groceries from state-run stores in an attempt to earn some cash.
