The state information agency TDH reports that on 1 March 2022 Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov, acting President, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of the Milli Gengesh (the upper chamber of Turkmenistan’s Parliament) met with members of the Halk Maslahaty of the first convocation and the Mejlis.
Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov pointed out that this year will mark 30 years since the adoption of Turkmenistan’s Constitution and the establishment of the State Flag.
The acting President also recalled that in 2020 changes and amendments to Turkmenistan’s Constitution were made: the two-chamber Parliament was set up and Parliamentary elections of members of the Halk Maslahaty and the Mejlis of the Milli Gengesh were held.
At that time, on 25 September, the Constitution was amended for the ninth time.
Berdymukhammedov was then quoted as saying that the Turkmen legislation “is constantly improving pursuant to the requirements of the epoch” and said that the Constitution needed to be revised “in line with the objectives set forth for the development of the country during the Revival of the new epoch of the powerful state”.
“The revival of the new epoch of the powerful state” refers to the next 30 year period (from 2022 to 2052) in Turkmenistan’s development. “The epoch of power and happiness”, launched in February 2012, is ongoing in Turkmenistan.
Addressing the attendees, the acting President instructed that the authority, rights and responsibilities of government bodies be reviewed when developing proposals designed to improve the Constitution.
