OSCE Center established partnership with the Ombudsman’s Office of Turkmenistan

The Ashgabat OSCE Center Head Natalya Drozd said that the OSCE Center has established a constructive partnership with the Ombudsman’s Office of Turkmenistan and other competent agencies on various human related issues.

“The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe has gained considerable experience in providing expert support to participating states in the implementation of OSCE commitments in the field of human rights and freedoms”, Natalya Drozd said.

According to the OSCE Center in Ashgabat, on November 9-13, Ashgabat hosted an online training course organized by the OSCE for law students on the topic “Compliance with international human rights standards in the investigation of criminal cases”.

The five-day event was attended by students of the Institute of International Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Magtumguly Turkmen State University.

The course introduced the participants to the human rights concept, history, types and functions.The students also reviewed the compliance with human rights in criminal law enforcement.International experts of Moldova and Romania separately dwelt upon ensuring the right to liberty (inviolability) of the person during the preliminary investigation, as well as the right of the suspect and the accused to defense and qualified legal assistance.

“The OSCE Center has established a constructive partnership with the Ombudsman’s Office of Turkmenistan and other competent agencies on various human relared issues. This course is an example of the long-term support provided by the Center to the host country in the field of improving human rights education for law students”, Natalia Drozd said.

The participants reviewed practical cases on the issues covered during the course and discussed standards of detention, guarantees against ill-treatment and the use of force, as well as ensuring individual rights during the suspension and termination of preliminary investigations.

In March 2017, an ombudsman institution was established in Turkmenistan.Yazdursun Kurbannazarova is a Turkmen public figure, the first Ombudsman, Authorized Representative for Human Rights in Turkmenistan.
