On 15 May after the torrential rain some streets were cordoned off for motor transport access.
It had been raining for about an hour, from 1.00 to 2.00 p.m., but this caused heavy flooding on the roads.
For instance, a busy intersection of Baba Annanov street and 10-ýyl Abadançylyk street was cordoned off for over two hours.
According to the weather forecast by Gismeteo, torrential rains are expected to hit Ashgabat in the coming days. Heavy rainfall, over 22 mm, is forecasted in a week on 23 May.
Let us recall that a month ago Ashgabat and the country’s southern provinces were flooded.
According to correspondents of “Chronicles of Turkmenistan” two children died as a result of mudslides.
Numerous casualties were recorded in neighbouring Afghanistan and Iran.
Official Turkmen media outlet did not report about the natural disaster.Some pro-governmental news outlets refuted the information about the flooding and ironically said in their publications that it was not about time to build an ark and even encouraged residents to seek benefits in the rains.
The capital has been regularly flooded for many years. Constant floods are the results of mistakes made during the designing and construction of roads. Storm water sewage system is not envisaged or is insufficient.
In May 2018, following the flooding in the main street Berdymukhammedov ordered the construction of new storm water drainage system and repair of the existing ones.
Yet, in February 2019 the head of the state expressed discontent with the efforts undertaken by the public utilities services to minimize the influence of weather conditions and their consequences.
