Turkmenistan advocates for intensifying the formation of a global energy security system, Trend reports referring to President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov’s speech in Baku at the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit.
“The basis of the energy security system should include fair and transparent principles, equal access to energy sources and means of their delivery, taking into account and recognizing the interests of suppliers, buyers and transit countries of energy resources,” the Turkmen president said, the Turkmenistan State News Agency reported.
For many years, Turkmenistan has been taking steps to establish broad international partnership in the field of comprehensive energy security, Berdimuhamedov noted.
The Turkmen president added that during the 74th session of the UN General Assembly, Turkmenistan plans to submit for its consideration a draft resolution aimed at ensuring reliable and stable transit of energy carriers and its role in sustainable development and international cooperation.
In 2017, Turkmenistan proposed the creation of a special body - the UN Energy Council and the UN expert group on energy security.
For Turkmenistan, the strategic priority for ensuring energy security is the diversification of transport infrastructure, which can ensure the delivery of energy resources to international markets through creating an extensive network of a multivariate pipeline system.
Turkmenistan holds one of the key positions in the region in terms of natural gas supplies, gas is exported to China and Russia.
