26.11.2019 | “Magnificent Margiana” for the first time in Russia

The exposition “Magnificent Margiana”, dedicated to the 90th birth anniversary of prominent archeologist, academician of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan, Victor Ivanovich Sarianidi (1929-2013) is showcased in the State Museum of Oriental Art in Moscow.

The exposition, presented at the oldest Museum of Oriental cultures in Russia, exhibits are photos and books, telling about the life and work of the famous scientist, documents from his personal archive, anthropological representation of inhabitants of the country of Margush of the Bronze Age, photo materials of the excavations carried out by the Margiana archaeological expedition.

A separate stand with photos is dedicated to the work of Russian restorers, who together with their colleagues from the Museum of Fine Arts of Turkmenistan and Mary Velayat Museum of Local History have been working for several years to recreate and preserve the unique mosaics from Gonur-Depe - the capital of ancient Margiana.

These rare works of the Bronze Age masters have no analogues in the world and rank among the most valuable exhibits of the two Turkmen museums.Before opening the exhibition, a round-table meeting took place in the museum.

Friends, colleagues, fellow citizens of V.Sarianidi - representatives of the Greek diaspora in Moscow shared their memories of the scientist, his multifaceted personality, discoveries and their significance for the historical science and filling unknown pages of the history of Turkmenistan in the Bronze Age.

A video film, created by the team of the orient.tm web site, was demonstrated during the meeting.The meeting participants could see Gonur-Depe from a bird's eye view and feel the atmosphere and spirit of this protected corner of the Turkmen land.

The exhibition “Magnificent Margiana” will tell the citizens of Moscow and guests to the Russian capital about the mysteries and treasures of the ancient Kingdom of Margush, revealed to the world due to the sensational discoveries of Victor Sarianidi.
