Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, Sept. 21

By Huseyn Hasanov Trend:

As many as 863 people who permanently reside in Turkmenistan and didn't have citizenship, have received one, Trend reports referring to a decree of the head of state.

According to the document, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the State Migration Service and other Turkmen agencies have been ordered to continue handling paperwork of stateless persons wishing to become citizens of Turkmenistan, with the subsequent submission of proposals for consideration by the Turkmen president.

In November 2014, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) approved a global plan of action to eradicate statelessness for 2014-2024, which was enshrined in a resolution of the UN General Assembly. In 2011-2018, 8,880 people were accepted into the citizenship of Turkmenistan.
