A large oil field has been discovered in the Gulf of Guinea

A large oil deposit has been discovered on the shelf of Côte d'Ivoire, in the waters of the Gulf of Guinea. Its reserves are estimated at 1,5-2 billion barrels of oil and up to 67 billion cubic meters of associated gas. Snob.ru reports this with reference to Ecofin.

The Italian energy company Eni and the Ivorian Petroci stumbled upon an oil field at a depth of 7 kilometers during drilling.

Eni and Petroci have previously collaborated, having discovered the Baleine field offshore Côte d'Ivoire. The first stage of Baleine has already been commissioned in 2023 and produces 22 thousand barrels of oil daily.

The news about the field in the Gulf of Guinea is especially relevant given the cessation of gas production in Groningen (Netherlands) due to earthquakes. This is Europe's largest field, supplying gas to Northwestern Europe for 60 years.
