A traditional carnival takes place in Venice

The Venice Carnival, one of the most famous in the world, started on Sunday, January 28. The event will last until February 13, “Fat Tuesday” before the start of Easter Lent according to the Catholic calendar. TASS reports this.

This year's carnival is dedicated to Marco Polo, the famous Venetian merchant and traveler who died 700 years ago. The program will include numerous performances by street performers and musicians, theater performances, as well as Chinese New Year celebrations.

The main characters of the carnival are the mummers who take to the streets and bridges of Venice in bright costumes and masks. Traditional costumes for Carnival are historical dresses and decorated masks. There are still workshops in Venice where they are made. The cost of a complete authentic costume can reach several thousand euros.
