Last week prices for some vegetables and fruit went down in Ashgabat.
Prices for potatoes and onions dropped by 2 to 3 manats whereas the price for apples went down by 5 to 10 manats.
Correspondents of “Chronicles of Turkmenistan” attribute this to the fact that Turkmenistan has agreed to provide passage to Iranian trucks through its territory.
In “Altyn” store located on Garashsyzlyk street and in a supermarket on Andalib street (formerly “Balyk” store) potatoes are sold at 4 manats per kilo with a limit of 4 kilos per customer. Apples are available at 10 to 15 manats per kilo.
It is reported that owners of these store have an opportunity to purchase imported produce cheaper. In other privately-owned stores prices for fruit and vegetables are 1 to 2 manats higher.
Prices for local cucumbers and tomatoes have remained at the same level. Cucumbers grown in greenhouses cost 8 to 10 manats whereas tomatoes are sold at 13-14 manats.
When the Turkmen authorities closed checkpoints on the Turkmen-Iranian border, prices for fruit and vegetables supplied primarily from Iran, skyrocketed. Prices dropped when Turkmen opened the border for a short time.
On 14 October, 2021 Turkmenistan again agreed to provide passage to trucks from Iran through the checkpoint Incheh-Borun on the condition that local tow vehicles will transport them through Turkmenistan. The post After re-opening of the Iranian border prices for some vegetables drop in Ashgabat first appeared on Chronicles of Turkmenistan.
