Ashgabat stores give away groceries to those in need in honour of Ramadan

During a holy month of Ramadan, which is celebrated from 2 April to 2 May this year, it is common to help those in need. Correspondents of “Chronicles of Turkmenistan” report that privately-owned stores in Ashgabat are conducting charity initiatives whereas mosques give away donations to those in need.

Entrepreneurs arrange charity lunches and give away groceries and merchandise with owners of stores and cafes informing residents about these acts on the Internet.

On 2 April “Sport” store in the residential district Parakhat -7/1 announced that they would be giving away children’s clothes to low-income families.Starting from early in the morning hundreds of people from all districts of the capital gathered there.

By midday the store ran out of merchandise allocated for this purpose.Those who did not get anything were waiting for a new batch.For two days residents came to the store despite the fact that shop assistance warned them there no more clothes would be given away.

A grocery store Hoşwagt on Magistralnaya street announced that groceries would be distributed to disabled residents.On 7 April several hundred residents gathered in front of the shop.

After the first 10 to 12 people had received bags with groceries, there was no order in the queue: the crowd rushed to the entrance and people started pushing each other.

The shop assistance had to close the shop.

The disabled residents and relatives of those who were not able to come personally, asked the store owner to continue giving away grocery sets because they literally have no food at home. The shop assistants made lists with the names and addressed and promised to deliver groceries to people’s homes.
