On 18 October political consultations between Foreign Ministers of Azerbaijan Elmar Mamedyarov and of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov were held.
In the course of the meeting the sides discussed mutual support rendered in the framework of international organizations and extending the legal framework between the two countries.
The Foreign Ministers of Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan signed the partnership program for 2019-2020.
Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry reports that Mamedyarov “expressed gratitude to Turkmenistan for supporting Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity and sovereignty in the context of Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict”.
As of this publication, Turkmenistan’s Foreign Ministry has not reported about the outcomes of the meeting.
It should be highlighted that Ashgabat has never made any official announcements in favour of a certain party to the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict” by taking a neutral stance.
In 2014 during his visit to Ashgabat former President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan thanked Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov for the neutral position in this issue. “We are grateful to Turkmenistan for the understanding and upholding the principle of neutrality in the issue which is of significance to us”, Sargsyan said.
In 2016 Azeri media outlets reports that Turkmenistan articulated its full support to Baku and even allegedly proposed to provide military assistance to Azerbaijan. However, the Armenian media outlets later refuted this information referring to Turkmen diplomats.
No official announcements pertaining to this issue were made by official Ashgabat.
