Brazilian deputies approved a bill to establish “King Pele Day”

The Chamber of Deputies of Brazil has supported a bill that proposes to establish a holiday in the country in honor of the legendary football player Pele, “AiF” reports with reference to Estadao. The holiday will be celebrated on November 19, the day when Pele scored his thousandth career goal in 1969.

The bill must now be approved by the Brazilian Senate. If this happens, “King Pele Day” will become an official public holiday in the country.

This is not the first time Brazil has honored Pele's memory. In 2022, a memorial was opened at the cemetery in Santos, Brazil, where the football player is buried. Additionally, Pele's name was included in the Portuguese dictionary as a synonym for “best”.

Pele, whose real name was Edson Arantes do Nascimento, died in December 2022 at the age of 82. He won the World Cup three times with the Brazilian national team and became the national champion six times with “Santos”. In total, he scored more than 1200 goals during his career.
