Chinese scientists presented a DVD with a capacity of 200 TB

Researchers from Shanghai University of Science and Technology have developed an optical disk that can hold 200 TB of information. That's 40 000 times the capacity of a regular DVD. Techcult.ru reports this.

The properties of the new product are based on three factors: special photosensitive material: AIE-DDPR, developed through decades of research, permits data to be stored on 100 layers of disk.

ultra-precise encoding technology: The “spots” for recording information on each layer are only 54 nanometers in size, which ensures dense data packaging.nanometer laser: Provides precise synchronization of data read and write on a multilayer structure.

The production of such media is possible on standard equipment, and the production time of one copy is only 6 minutes.

While it's unlikely that such drives will be available in retail stores, they could revolutionize the way data centers store data. Compact optical disks AIE-DDPR compare favorably with traditional HDDs in size, and from SSDs in capacity.
