Cotton gin industry of Turkmenistan grew by almost a third in 2020

The production of the cotton gin industry of Turkmenistan in January-November 2020 increased more than 28 percent compared to the same period in 2019. It was facilitated by new production facilities and successful strategy of the government, the State Statistics Committee told the ORIENT.

The textile and cotton gin industries play important role in diversifying the Turkmen economy and creating new jobs. Growth in this area has ensured the strengthening of socio-economic welfare in the country, increasing the well-being of residents in urban and rural areas.

During the 12 months of last year, the production of cotton fiber in Turkmenistan increased by 22.6 percent compared to 2019.In the non-state sector of the economy, this figure reached 19.1 percent.

In addition, the production of cotton yarn, which is the main component for the production of finished textile products, increased by 3.9 percent.

Also, the decision to fully process the whole cotton crop grown in the country starting from 2019 has become a powerful incentive to develop the cotton gin industry. The initiative was put forward at a session of the People’s Council of Turkmenistan held in 2018 and was fully supported by the government.

The growth in indicators was achieved due to the modernization of production facilities. In 2020, two large cotton spinning factories Turkmenkala and Sakarchaga were re-equipped.

Thanks to the measures taken, the export of finished textiles produced by Turkmen state-owned enterprises was also noticeably increased. In January-November 2020, it grew by 13.4 percent compared to the same period in 2019.

To maintain the achieved growth rates, it is planned to continue the modernization of existing and construction of new factories. In 2021, the Ministry of Textile Industry will modernize the Tagtabazar Cotton Factory, as well as increase the capacity of the Dashoguz Cotton Factory and the Bayramali Textile Complex.

As the ORIENT was informed, another two large textile complexes are scheduled to be commissioned in July and August. The first one will be put into operation in Kaahka district, Ahal province. The enterprise will produce 3,650 tons of compact pigne cotton yarn and 12 million square meters of high-quality fabric for sewing clothes per year.

The second complex will be launched in Babadayhan district, Ahal province. 3,300 tons of fine-fiber compact pigne cotton yarn and 20 million square meters of high-quality fabrics will be produced at the factory per year.
