'Dune' director grants dying fan's wish

Canadian film director Denis Villeneuve, known for the films "Arrival" and "Blade Runner 2049", made a touching act. He arranged a pre-premiere screening of Dune Part 2 for a hospice patient in Quebec who wanted to see the film before he died. This is reported by daily.afisha.ru with reference to CBC.

The story became known thanks to Jose Gagnon, a worker at the palliative center. The dying man shared his deepest wish with her, and without hesitation she decided to help.

Gagnon contacted director Sébastien Pilot, who in turn introduced her to Villeneuve. The director and his wife, Tanya Lapointe, did not remain indifferent to this story.

At first they offered to bring the Dune fan to Los Angeles for the premiere of the film, but his condition did not allow him to travel. Then Villeneuve decided to take a bold step: he sent a copy of the not yet released film to the city of Saguenay, where the dying man was located.

The filmmaker's assistant personally delivered Villeneuve's laptop to Quebec a month and a half before the film's official release.

“They locked themselves in a room in the palliative care home and the man was able to watch a movie,” Gagnon said.

Unfortunately, due to his serious condition, the man fell asleep before finishing the viewing and soon died. Villeneuve and Lapointe, according to Gagnon, were saddened that he could not watch Dune to the end.

"They said, 'He didn't see the ending, and you know, the ending of the movie is so good.' I replied: “You don’t understand, it’s incredible what this man went through. The end of the film, when you die, it doesn’t mean anything... for himself, he managed everything,” Gagnon said.

Villeneuve and his wife commented on the pre-premiere screening at the hospice: “This is for him, this is for this man we are making a film, this is for the guy who said before he died: “I want to see this film.”
