On 25 August, 2020 a regular session of Turkmenistan’s Majlis (Parliament) was held during a break between the session of the Khalk Maslakhaty (People’s Council).
Members of Turkmenistan’s Parliament “unanimously voted for and approved” the Constitutional Law “On amendments to Turkmenistan’s Constitution”, the state information agency TDH reports. It was subsequently signed by President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov.
The adoption of this law in the run-up to the 29th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s independence marks a momentous historic event”, – the head of state said.
The law “on amendments to Turkmenistan’s Constitution” will come into effect on 1 January, 2021. In this connection the Khalk Maslakhaty will be abolished. The President signed a relevant decree.
The two-chamber Parliament has been set up in Turkmenistan. Pursuant to the law, the first elections of the members of the Khalk Maslakhaty of the National Council are appointed by the President.
