Ecologists Propose Optimizing Rogun Hydropower Project in Tajikistan

The international coalition of specialists "Rivers Without Borders" presented an analysis of options to optimize the Rogun Hydropower Plant project in Tajikistan. In their study submitted to the World Bank, they suggested adjusting the parameters of the hydropower facility, as reported by the publication rivers.help.

Experts recommend reducing the dam's height by 70 meters from the planned 335 meters. This change could significantly reduce the scale of the resettlement program for local residents.

The World Bank has allocated $350 million for the initial phase of the project. This funding will also support the implementation of a modern environmental monitoring system.

The study points out that the current project configuration may leave some unresolved issues. Electricity supply limitations could persist until 2036, and creating the reservoir will require additional focus on ecological concerns.

"Diversifying energy sources, including solar generation, will enhance the resilience of the energy system to various factors," the document states.

Experts estimate that these proposed changes will help ensure stable energy supply by 2030-2031.

Experts emphasized the importance of careful planning during reservoir construction to maintain the ecological balance of the water system.
