Extension stamps for Turkmen international travel passports do not allow travel to a third country

Since August 2020 Consulates of Turkmenistan have been extending international travel passports for Turkmen nationals stranded abroad, who are unable to return to their home country because of closed borders during the pandemic.

A stamp with a consul’s signature is put in expired passports as well as a QR code, pursuant to which the ID will be valid until the end of 2022.

However, according to Turkmen news, these passports are not acknowledged by third countries. For instance, citizens of Turkmenistan in Russia are unable to obtain visas for European countries.

In addition, even if a visa of a third country is available, holders of “extended” passports are prevented from going through passport control.

Turkmen nationals tell about the same problems in Turkmen groups in social media.

In other words, an extension stamp allows its holder to stay in the country of stay but not to travel to and enter other countries.
