Farmers in Turkmenistan’s Dashoguz to Plant 1,000 Hectares of Barley

One thousand hectares of land have been allocated for sowing winter barley in Turkmenistan’s northern velayat of Dashoguz. The winter barley’s advantages include its early ripening, good use of moisture reserves in the soil and greater drought tolerance, the country’s official media reported on Thursday.

The largest winter barley producing region of the velayat will be S.Turkmenbashi etrap, where 250 hectares are allotted for its planting. 150 hectares each in Dashoguz’s Koneurgench and Akdepa etraps have also been allotted for the grain’s sowing.

In the northern region of Turkmenistan, farmers grow several domestic and foreign varieties of barley.

Winter barley is one of the main feeds for animal husbandry in Dashoguz velayat. Local scientists are consistently working on the development of new, more advanced varieties of barley, including those adapted to growing in difficult weather and climatic conditions of Turkmenistan’s northern region.

Harvest of mung beans, also known as maash, is presently underway in Dashoguz. The region's farmers expect to receive at least 15 centners of the harvest from each hectare.
