Four-storey apartment blocks demolished in Ashgabat

Correspondents of “Chronicles of Turkmenistan” report that four-storey residential houses are being demolished on the intersection of Turkmenbashi and Atamurat Niyazov avenues in Ashgabat.

The area has been fenced and demolition works have commenced.

On 22 July, 2021 construction projects for new facilities in Ashgabat were presented to President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov, among which was the new municipal services building.

After comparing the urban development plan with the city map, the editorial board of “Chronicles of Turkmenistan” managed to find out that in order to construct a new building, at least four apartment blocks need to be demolished at the intersection of the avenues, which was eventually done.

Later the same day other projects, which involve the demolition of other houses and buildings, were presented to the head of state. More information and the demolition schemes are available in the article of “Chronicles of Turkmenistan” here.

Former residents of the apartment blocks said that no alternative accommodation had been provided to the majority of them. The municipal authorities only recommended purchasing apartments in the so-called “elite” apartment blocks. No subsidies or incentives for new accommodation have been envisaged.

The residents who have been evicted are temporarily moving in with their relatives or need to rent accommodation.

The intersection is located in the centre of Ashgabat with the Presidential Palace “Oguzhan” a block away to the north.

The remodeling of the intersection was launched in January 2020 when Berdymukhammedov ordered to build a roundabout and a tunnel featuring a monument in the center.

The construction of Mahabat monument in the shape of a сube with eight-pointed stars with built-in displays was completed in October 2020.

Following this, in January 2021 residential buildings in the northern-eastern corner of the intersection were demolished, including a famous apartment block built in the Soviet times with the “Veteran” store on the ground floor.

The building of the 1st specialized military school named after Berdymukhammedov Annayev under the Ministry of Defense will be built on the corner. The post Four-storey apartment blocks demolished in Ashgabat first appeared on Chronicles of Turkmenistan.
