Giant snail causes quarantine in the US city of Miramar

In the city of Miramar (Florida, USA), quarantine was introduced due to the appearance of a giant African snail, AiF-Moscow reports with reference to the New York Post.

The reason for the restrictive measures was that the snail is a carrier of the dangerous parasite "rat lung worm", which can cause meningitis in humans. In an area of approximately 5.5 square kilometers, where one individual was seen, it is planned to treat the area with a metaldehyde-based chemical to kill other mollusks.

Residents of Miramar may leave the quarantine zone, but they are prohibited from exporting plant products from there, on which snails can lay eggs.
