Tightened security measures are being introduced in Turkmenistan prior to the start of the Asian Games. Radio “Azatlyk” reports that military patrols are stationed on the roads, in the parks and in the markets across the country.
According to the Radio, markets in Dashoguz velayat are being patrolled by army conscripts and police officers with binoculars. There is a total of over 20 patrols, primarily made up of military officers.
Patrols comprised of law enforcement and military officers have been deployed in the trade zone referred to as the “fifth bazaar” and other markets located in Balkan velayat and the city of Balkanabat. The number of security guards at the city airport has also been increased.
Moreover, Turkmenistan has imposed tightened security measures at the Caspian marine border with Azerbaijan and Iran, the Radio says. The number of military patrol vessels has been increased.
The number of patrols on the motorways, in the parks and the three main entrances to the capital is reported to have been increased.
“Soldiers and police officers have been stationed to keep vigil at the three entry points: from Dashoguz, Balkan and Mary velayats. There are now 10 police officers and 10 conscripts at each entrance whereas only road inspection officers had been on duty before”, — an inhabitant of the capital says.
Let us recall that pursuant to the Presidential decree, starting from 17 August and until the closing of the Asian Games, residents will need to obtain a permit to be able to enter and exit the country.
On 19 August a ban on the sale of alcohol was also imposed in Turkmenistan.
