Indian billionaire will rebuild “Slumdog Millionaire” district

The company of Indian billionaire Gautam Adani will rebuild the Dharavi district in the center of Mumbai from the movie “Slumdog Millionaire”, writes “MIR 24” with reference to The Wall Street Journal.

According to the Mumbai authorities, the reconstruction of the slums, where the family of the main character Jamal Malik lived, will cost more than 2,4 billion USD.

The search for a developer to redevelop the densely populated area began in 2004. The complexity of the project lies in the need to find housing for a million residents of Dharavi for the duration of the work.

Gautam Adani's fortune, according to Forbes, is estimated at 44 billion USD. However, local residents are afraid that the billionaire will not have enough money and the project will drag on for many years. Also, people are worried that after the renovation of the area they will have to look for a new home due to rising rental prices.

According to The Wall Street Journal, after the restructuring, new, more spacious houses with separate bathrooms will appear in the area. In addition, the developer plans to build roads and provide Dharavi with water, gas and a sewerage system. According to the government plan, new houses should be ready within seven years.
