International and domestic practices in waste management sphere are discussed in Ashgabat

The capital hotel Yildyz hosted regional meeting “Effective Waste Management” organized with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, the State Committee for Natural Protection and Land Resources and the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat.

Representatives of various environmental protection agencies and organizations of Central Asia, which activity is related to the problem of different wastes disposal industrial, solid, medical, biogenic, domestic ones, as well as international experts were the participants of the meeting.

During the session, the reports on the world practice in waste management and regulation of different emissions were presented. The forecast of the waste management on Central Asian region was provided, recommendations on the development of strategic documents were given and advanced practices for the development of national strategies and action plans were presented.

International experts from Romania, Belgium, Hungary and other EU countries spoke about the methods of wastes classification, conservation and disposal of the wastes especially specific one like electric and technical equipment and waste oils as well as construction wastes and garden and park garbage.

The attention was focused on plastic bottles, scrap metal and waste paper, opportunities of use of biogas produced at waste facilities for domestic needs.

It was mentioned that many countries implement the principles of closed cycle of goods production for the economy of natural resources.Today, dozens of companies using the wastes as a material base are operation in EU countries.

For example, famous French brand Michelin participates in creation of the technologies allowing recycle used tyres to the materials used for tyre production.

The report of Juliette Koehler (Switzerland), the Head of the Legal and Management Department of Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions was dedicated to international agreements in transboundary transportation of wastes including the dangerous one.

Deputy Coordinator of the OSCE Economic and Ecology Activity Bureau Ralph Ernst informed about the mandate of his organization in treatment of dangerous emissions.The waste treatment meets the goals of sustainable development, namely in accountable consumption and production.

It reduces anthropogenic impact on the environment what in its turn mitigates the consequences of the climate change, - the participants highlighted.

The outcomes of the meeting were commented by Head of the Department of International Relations and Planning of the State Committee for Natural Protection and Land Resources Berdy Berdiyev: “Turkmenistan carries out active work for the establishment of integrated waste management system and improvement of relative regulatory and legal acts.

In particular, back in 2015, Turkmenistan adopted the Law on the wastes, implements National Programme for transformation of social and living conditions of rural, village, settlement and city population until 2020, which stipulates the modernization of sewage and treatment facility systems, regulates the control for ecological safety of the technologies used in production.

For example, reconstruction of sewage and water supply systems, cleaning of soil from oil wastes and disposal of oil sludge have been completed at Turkmenbashy Refinery Complex”.

The discussion presented excellent opportunity for expert share of the practices in waste management sphere. Besides, such urgent for global development subject as the nano-waste management presented by Austrian participants of the seminar, was highlighted. Similar experience is undoubtedly is very valuable for our country oriented on innovative development.
