Iran Aims to Swap Turkmen Gas to Azerbaijan

Tehran and Baku have agreed on swap gas supplies to Azerbaijan via Iran from neighboring countries, including Turkmenistan, the Iranian Minister of Petroleum Javad Owji said on Sunday in Tehran following the talks with visiting Azerbaijani Deputy Prime Minister Shahin Mustafayev.

"A constructive meeting was held with the Azerbaijani delegation and important agreements were reached," the Shana news agency quoted Owji as saying.

He expressed hope that in the coming weeks good agreements would be signed with Azerbaijan in the field of oil and gas, and development of Caspian oil and gas fields.

Announcing the side’s agreement regarding swap gas supplies, Owji added "good agreements were reached on the gas contract to Nakhichevan."

The senior Azerbaijani official for his part highlighted the successful cooperation between Iran and Azerbaijan in all areas, especially energy.

“We discussed a number of new projects in the energy sector and I believe new documents will be signed in the near future.” Mustafayev stated.

Iran in August announced the discovery of a huge natural gas field Chalus in the Iranian sector of the Caspian Sea.
