Iran Says Ready to Transit Turkmen Gas to More Countries

Deputy Foreign Minister of Iran for Economic Diplomacy Mehdi Safari in a meeting with Shahym Abdrakhmanov, the Deputy Chairman of the Turkmen Government overseeing the country's oil and gas industry, in Turkmenistan’s Avaza National Tourist Zone on Monday stated the successful experience of gas transit from Turkmenistan to Azerbaijan through Iranian territory and said Iran is also prepared to transit Turkmen gas to other neighboring countries.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Ministerial Transport Conference of Landlocked Developing Countries.

The Turkmen and Iranian officials met to explore ways of expanding bilateral ties, according to the press release of the Ministry of foreign Affairs of Iran.

In the meeting, Safari reaffirmed Iran’s readiness to boost cooperation with Turkmenistan in the oil and gas sector. Safari further said Iran is capable of exporting technical and engineering services and Iranian-made goods to Turkmenistan and also giving Turkmenistan access to high seas through southern Iranian ports of Bandar Abbas and Chabahar.

He added that holding trade exhibitions can pave the way for better introducing economic capabilities and trade opportunities of Iran and Turkmenistan.

In the meeting, Shahym Abdrakhmanov welcomed Safari’s proposals and stressed the need to use opportunities for cooperation and bilateral trade to the full.

Mehdi Safari also held separate meetings with Turkmen Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov, Annageldy Yazmyradov, the Deputy Chairman of the Turkmen Government in charge of the agro-industrial complex, and Charymyrat Purchekov, the Deputy Chairman of the Turkmen Government in charge of the construction, industrial and energy issues.

Iran borders Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iraq, Pakistan, Turkey, and Turkmenistan. It shares maritime borders with Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
