Iran supplies cigarettes to Turkmenistan. Prices for tobacco products halve

Correspondents of “Chronicles of Turkmenistan” report that on 8 April, 2021 a large batch of Iranian cigarettes was delivered to Turkmenistan from Iran.

They are now being sold in privately-owned stores of Ashgabat at 45 manats per pack. Before the batch arrived, the cheapest cigarettes were sold at 70 manats whereas currently the price has dropped down to 45 manats.

Those who used to buy the cheapest home-made cigarettes are now purchasing Iranian tobacco products.

Privately-owned shops still sell expensive cigarettes, which cost up to 300 manats per pack.

Affordable cigarettes last appeared in Turkmenistan in early February. Before they disappeared from the store counters, the price for the most affordable cigarettes went up from 32 to 50 manats per pack.

Because of high prices for cigarettes residents of Turkmenistan switched to home-made tobacco products. They are made of boiled and shredded tobacco stalks, which are illegally grown by rural residents.

A piece of cotton wool is used instead of a filter. These hand-rolled cigarettes are sold by vendors at the price of 4 manats apiece or 40 manats for a 10 cigarette pack.

In late March, after the border with Iran were re-opened and imports from Iran were resumed, prices for fruit and vegetable considerably dropped down in Ashgabat’s grocery stores. The post Iran supplies cigarettes to Turkmenistan.
