Long-awaited praise from my demanding grandfather

Abdylla Allanurov, a young teacher at the State Academy of Arts of Turkmenistan, owes the jeweler career choice to his grandfather, artist-painter Rahim Ishankuliev.Once Rahim Ishankulievich saw a drawing of his grandson.

He looked at it for a long time and finally praised it: “Not bad!Even very good!" Rakhim Ishankulievich's ratings "Normal" and "Not bad" were equivalent to "Excellent".

“On the advice of my grandfather, I entered Byashim Nurali Children's Art School and started learning the basics of jewelry art”, Abdylla recalls. Together with teachers, we visited exhibitions of ancient jewelry. I soon realized that for centuries, Turkmen jewelers have created perhaps the most beautiful jewelry in the world.

In the art school of Byashim Nurali, I received basic knowledge.First of all, these are the Turkmen national patterns, which were first applied to a sheet of paper, and then to a plate.

Jewelers work with expensive materials, so each student was given only one plate and one stone.According to the sketch approved by the teacher, we had to make a brooch.

I solemnly laid my first brooch in front of my grandfather. “Normal”, the grandfather said indifferently. “You need to think carefully about where to continue your study. With such a baggage of knowledge, you will undoubtedly be admitted to an art school.

However, you can take a chance and try to enter the academy. You have to choose whether it is better a tomtit in your hand or a crane in the sky”.

I chose a crane. It was not for nothing. I successfully passed the entrance exams and was admitted to the Academy of Arts.

Again, I plunged into the knowledge of jewelry art. However, the Turkmen jewelry classics are so luxurious and original that it is not boring to study it all your life.

I put my new brooch on the table in front of my grandfather, carefully watching his reaction. Grandfather looked at it for a long time and finally said: "Good, but it could have been done better".

“He derides me!” - the first thing that came to my mind. “The teacher praised my brooch, all the guys congratulated me on such a job, but he doesn't like anything.

I wanted to give up on this grumbler and not show him anything else. However, how to give up on him if the name of Rahim Ishankuliev has won authority among the academy teachers, for many of whom he was a mentor.

I decided at all costs to get my grandfather's credits. This has become the goal of my life.

As a fourth-year student at the Academy, I showed my new brooch to my grandfather again, he looked at it for a long time, took a mirror and began to check the identity of delicate carvings in the mirror image. Well done, grandson! Now I see the handwriting of a real master in your work!”

Soon, my grandfather passed away. Sometimes I think what if I had not had time to show my last brooch to my grandfather. Would I still be without his blessing? It makes me sick at heart.

Several years have passed. Now I am no longer a student, but a teacher.I began my acquaintance with students with the fact that we, modern jewelers, have a responsible mission - to become worthy successors of Turkmen zergers.

In modern design, Turkmen Jeweller's art must also be beautiful so that the glory of talented masters of our region does not fade.
