Natalia German: Turkmenistan demonstrates complex approach to water management

Speaking during the press conference on occasion of laying the foundation of a new village in the area of the Altyn Asyr Lake, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, the head of the UN Regional Center for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA) Natalia German thanked the Turkmen side for the opportunity to participate in such an important event.

She noted that this was not the first initiative of the President of Turkmenistan on the preservation and the efficient use of water resources and ecology in the Aral Sea basin, which ultimately aims at improving the living conditions and increasing the welfare of the population.

In recent years, water, peace and security issues have occupied a special place on the international agenda.Many countries worldwide face water shortage is further influenced by climate change.

It is not by accident that the United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed the decade 2018-2028 as the International Decade for Action 'Water for Sustainable Development'.Water also plays a key role in achieving the goals of the “Agenda 2030”.

It is known that water issues are closely related to many other issues, including energy, food, environmental protection, socio-economic development, transport communications and, accordingly, peace and well-being.

In this context, the construction of a new village near the “Altyn Asyr” Turkmen Lake can serve as a model of an integrated approach to address the water management issues a long-term basis.

According to the head of UNRCCA, the approaches to regional partnership on the international arena in the context of the integrated water resources management, initiated by Turkmenistan, deserve full support.
