One of the oldest cemeteries in Naples is rapidly collapsing

At one of the largest cemeteries in Europe - Poggioreale in Naples, an uncontrollable situation with the destruction of old graves is observed, writes “Moskovsky Komsomolets”.

Opened in 1837, the old cemetery is rapidly deteriorating due to poor management and rampant crime.

Last winter, two columbariums (repositories of urns with the ashes of the dead after cremation) with 600 niches for storing the remains collapsed in the cemetery due to the digging of the Neapolitan metro tunnel right under the territory of the cemetery.

Also, representatives of the Neapolitan mafia “Camorra” had a hand in the destruction of the burial places. They seized other people's crypts in order to bury their members in them. In 2017, they seized an entire columbarium, which they were going to use to bury their leader, who was killed in a shootout.
