Qatar banned the use of insect protein in food

The Ministry of Health of Qatar has banned the use alternative protein sources, that is protein obtained from insects, in its products, reports “MIR 24” with reference to RIA Novosti.

According to representatives of the Qatar Ministry of Health, the use of food containing insects does not comply with halal standards, which prohibit the use of insects or additives made from them in food.

Laboratories in Qatar carefully control the origin of proteins in food products to ensure that they do not violate the technical requirements for halal products adopted in the Persian Gulf countries.

In the meantime, the list of insects permitted for use in food has been expanded in the EU countries. It now includes mealworms, migratory locust, cricket and buffalo worm. According to scientists, these insects are safe and can be used as food without restrictions.
