Radio “Azatlyk”: over 25 thousand people have died of COVID-19 in Turkmenistan

Radio “Azatlyk” reports that since the start of the pandemic in 2020 over 25,000 people have died of COVID-19 in Turkmenistan.

A source at the Radio says that the velayats keep track of COVID-19 deaths and these data are forwarded to the Ministry of Healthcare on a daily basis. The largest number of deaths has been recorded in Lebap and Mary velayats.

It is highlighted that the real numbers might be even higher because out of fear of repercussions, the executives of the regions undercount the data reporting lower numbers. In many death certificates medical doctors do not mention COVID-19 indicating other causes of death, such as heart failure.

“Chronicles of Turkmenistan” has previously quoted a healthcare practitioner from an Ashgabat medical institution who said that there is no reliable statistics of COVID-19 cases. Because the Turkmen authorities refuse to acknowledge COVID-19 countries because, this is impossible.

In early October, with the UNDP assistance, the Russian expert consulted officials of Turkmenistan’s Healthcare Ministry to set up an electronic register, which will help to determine the vaccination rates and plan vaccine supplies.

This might suggest existing problems with monitoring the number of those who have been vaccinated. The post Radio “Azatlyk”: over 25 thousand people have died of COVID-19 in Turkmenistan first appeared on Chronicles of Turkmenistan.
