Review of prices for basic food products in Turkmenistan

The statistics show price fluctuations in Turkmenistan from the beginning of the year until 30 July. Each category has 5 to 10 food items showing their monthly price. Of all food items in the same category a monthly average is calculated which is then compared with the previous month.

Vegetables. The expected seasonal drop in prices is being seen.Onions and potatoes are sold at 3,5 manats per kilo.Locally produced potatoes at 2 manats are sold at local bazaars, but they are so small that there is almost no demand.

The price for tomatoes has dropped from 6 to 2 manats and for cucumbers from 6 to 1,8 manats per kilo.

Fruits.If at the beginning of the year a drop in price was observed, now prices have gone up again.For instance, the price for green apples rose from 8 to 16 manats, for bananas from 7 to 9 manats.

The season for local apples and peaches is currently underway, but they will be excluded from statistics as these fruits are available only in summer.

Canned goods. A stable monthly price growth is being observed. Let us recall that last year the price for canned goods went up by 30 percent; black olives went from 8 to 9 manats, and canned champignons from 6,5 to 7 manats.

Cheese. There was a sharp price hike for cheese at the end of last year and selected cheeses disappeared from store counters altogether.Overall, this year there has been a moderate increase in prices.

The price for “Gouda” cheese rose from 34 to 45 manats, “Svalya” from 50 to 60 manats and “Russian cheese” from 54 to 58 manats per kilo.

The price for Russian-made vegetable oil increased from 8 to 8,5 manats per liter. The flour price remains the same 3,6 manats per kilo.

Prices for sugar skyrocketed last year from 3 to 12 manats in privately-owned stores and to 4,8 manats in state-run stores where a restriction of 1,5 kilos per person applied.

This year the price in supermarkets increased to 5,8 manats in April but the quantity restriction was lifted.As of late June a kilo of sugar cost 6 manats.

Soft drinks. According to the graph, the price hike started last April and last year the price for soft drinks did not rise. The price for Coca-Cola 0.5L. increased from 1,20 to 1,50 manats, for juice 8yap 1L. from 3.2 to 4.5 manats per juice pack.

Alcoholic beverages. Overall, since the start of the year prices for alcohol and other beverages have increased by 20-30 percent. The price for a bottle of vodka Serdar 0.5L. rose from 11 to 14 manats whereas the price for beer Berk 0.5L. from 5,5 to 6,50 manats per bottle.
