Rice fields in Turkmenistan re-plowed because of water shortage

On 15 July, 2018 rice fields in the agricultural district Shakhsenem located in the north of Turkmenistan are being re-plowed because of the irrigation water shortage.

Correspondents of “Chronicles of Turkmenistan” report that there is practically no water in the canals. The local authorities also prevent the region’s inhabitants from using water from the wells to water private garden lots.

As a result, the price for rice in the region increased from 1012 to 1820 manats per kilo. The Kuban rice, which is not popular with local residents, can be bought at 10 manats.
