On 6 October, 2018 the Turkmen civil rights activists Yalym Begov, aged 83, died. Radio “Azatlyk” reports that on Tuesday he was buried in his home town of Mary.
For many years Yalym Begov worked in the National Institute of Desert under Turkmenistan’s Academy of Sciences. He carried out scientific research and published articles devoted to temperature changes in the desert.
“Starting from 1991, Yalum aga had been actively promoting the ideas of democracy. He was an active member of the democratic movement, set up in the first day of Turkmenistan’s independence.
“He did a lot to disseminate information about the arbitrariness of the authorities on the internal arena”, — one of the late activist’s associate recalls in a conversation with Azatlyk.
Yalym Begov was one of the few Turkmen-based activists who did not fear to give interviews to Radio Azatlyk.
