Scientists: Dogs are experiencing a third wave of evolution

The scientific community notes the beginning of the third wave of dog evolution, caused by modern human needs for emotional closeness with pets. This transformation is connected with the growing demand of people for calm, friendly companions adapted to a measured urban lifestyle, “MIR 24” reports with reference to The Daily Star.

Unlike in the past, when dogs performed mainly economic functions guarding the territory, herding livestock and fighting pests today their main role has shifted towards emotional partnership. Modern pets are increasingly becoming full-fledged members of the family, sharing the daily life of their owners: from relaxing together on the couch to accompanying them during remote work.

Research shows that this social adaptation has led to biochemical changes in the dogs' bodies - an increase in the level of a hormone responsible for social bonds. These changes are especially noticeable in service dogs, which demonstrate a high degree of socialization and openness to strangers from an early age.

According to zoologists, this process marks the third wave of dog evolution, following their development from wild wolves to domestic animals. The new stage is characterized by deepening social interaction with humans and adaptation to the modern urban environment, which significantly affects the biological characteristics of these animals.
