Short-haul domestic flights to be canceled in Spain

The Spanish Parliament is preparing a bill to cancel short-haul domestic flights where train travel time does not exceed 2.5 hours. Euro-pulse.ru reports this.

The list of “prohibited” destinations has not yet been announced, but flights from Madrid to Barcelona, Alicante, Malaga, Pamplona, Santiago de Compostela and Valencia, as well as flights between Barcelona and Valencia, may be at risk.

An exception will be made for connecting flights that are part of international routes.

Why is Spain taking such a step? The answer is simple: caring for the environment. According to a report by the European Environment Agency (EEA), traveling by train is 5 times more environmentally friendly than flying.

For example: if all travelers on the Madrid-Barcelona route chose the train instead of the plane, greenhouse gas emissions would be halved - from 54 to 27 thousand tons.

Europe is increasingly fighting for green transport. France has already abandoned short- and medium-haul domestic flights.
