The Institute of Journalism to be set up in Turkmenistan

At the Cabinet session held on 26 January President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov announced that the Institute of Journalism is scheduled to be established in Turkmenistan to cover the latest positive developments taking place in the country.

“Numerous media outlets, which differ in their form of ownership, activities and ways of conveying information, are operating in Turkmenistan. It is quite natural that there is a need for highly qualified specialists.

The head of state regretted that a specialized higher educational establishment with the relevant infrastructure capable of addressing the aforementioned large-scale objectives in a centralized and comprehensive manner is not yet available in the country, and emphasized that the Institute of Journalism and Mass Communication is worth establishing”, — the state information agency TDH reports.

Bakhargul Abdyeva, who had previously held the post of the head of the Department of Culture under the Cabinet of Ministers, will be responsible for addressing this issue.

It should be noted that the overwhelming majority of newspapers and magazines, as well as TV and radio channels, are state-owned.However, on a regular basis President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov expresses discontent with the quality of television programs and makes irate statements that “Turkmenistan’s success stories and accomplishments are not sufficiently reflected in media outlets”.

At the Cabinet session held on 9 December the President ordered the establishment of relevant television programming.

In January 2018 the law “On television and radio broadcasting”, which envisages the promotion of the country’s achievements, was adopted in Turkmenistan.
