The topic of negotiations between Putin and Berdymukhammedov remains a mystery

It has remained unclear what topic was on the agenda of the closed-doors meeting between Presidents of Russia and Turkmenistan.

On 15 August, 2018 President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov paid a visit to Sochi where he met with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

According to the transcript of the open part of negotiations, which was posted by the Kremlin’s public affairs office, Berdymukhammedov requested a face-to-face meeting with Putin.

The sides intended to discuss “a full range of issues which are of interests for the bilateral relations: economy, social and community issues, the interaction in the humanitarian area and activities on the global arena”.

A day before the negotiations, the Russian President’s spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told journalists that the entire range of issues, including a potential energy dialogue, will be under discussion”.

The Turkmen television showed only a 60 second footage, 30 seconds of which were devoted to the record of the meeting, despite the fact that hours-long broadcasts are usually devoted to such high-level meetings.

The state information agency TDH only provided the Kremlin’s transcript of the meeting, but in a nutshell, and featured empty chairs on the background of the national flags.
