Thousands of shoes washed up in northern Denmark

Tens of thousands of shoes have washed up on beaches in northern Denmark as Storm Pia hit Europe's Atlantic coast. This was reported by Izvestia with reference to the DR TV channel.

The storm caused strong waves that blew the A.P. off the deck of the cargo ship. Moller-Maersk (Maersk) 46 containers with goods. The containers contained mostly shoes, but also medical equipment and plastic wheels for wheelbarrows.

Goods littered 14 kilometers of coastline. Even though the shoes are damaged by salt water, locals still take them home. According to Danish law, lost items remain the property of the freight company and collection is considered theft.

The head of the local police department appealed to people not to steal things and not to try to “pretend that they are cleaning here at night.”

Now local authorities are waiting for orders to collect the items in order to hand them over to the owner.
