The tradition of throwing a coin into the Trevi Fountain in memory of a trip to Rome brought a record income of 1,6 million euros in 2023, reports RIA Novosti with reference to the charitable organization Caritas.
Employees of the Roman energy company Acea collect coins from the fountain several times a week. During the period of the greatest influx of tourists, Trevi is “vacuumed” almost every day. The collected coins are packed into bags and sent for sorting and conversion.
All money goes to charity.
Interestingly, Trevi brings in more money per year than the average Roman museum. Thus, the profit of the National Roman Museum for the year is just over a million euros.
The Trevi Fountain, built in the Baroque style between 1732 and 1762 by the architect Nicolo Salvi, adjoins the façade of the Palazzo Poli. In the 1830s, the second floor of this palace was rented by the Russian princess Zinaida Volkonskaya.
