Correspondents of “Chronicles of Turkmenistan” report that on 18 February, 2021, the day before individual protests in Istanbul were announced, Turkish police officers had called Turkmen activists, including students and migrant workers and warned them that they would be held accountable for illegal actions and violations of the pandemic-related restrictions.
Migrant workers assume that the names and telephone numbers have been provided to Turkey’s police by the special services of Turkmenistan.
Two Turkmen nationals, who are allegedly related to the Embassy of Turkmenistan, visited several companies which employ Turkmenistani citizens. For instance, in the company “Jeunesse” they held staff meetings requesting employees “not to succumb to any provocation by the opposition and refrain from taking part in dubious protests”.
You should behave in a sensible way and keep a low profile at your workplace if you do not want to create problems for your family in Turkmenistan, – one of them said at the meeting in Jeunesse.
Students have also reported similar meetings held last week in educational establishments of Istanbul, Ankara and other cities where Turkmen nationals are studying.
Let us recall that on 19 February, 2021 Turkmen activists intended to hold a rally in New York in front of the UN headquarters and individual protests in Taskim Square, Istanbul over the death of a 14 year old Turkmen athlete Suleiman Tursunbayev. The post Turkmen activists in Istanbul requested to refrain “from participating in dubious rallies” first appeared on Chronicles of Turkmenistan.
