Turkmen Foreign Minister met online with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees

The partnership of Turkmenistan with the UN and its agencies became the topic of an online meeting of Foreign Minister of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov with UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi.

The parties noted that Turkmenistan, jointly with the UNHCR, is working under the #IBelong campaign to eradicate statelessness by 2024. Thus, over the past 15 years, 26 thousand people have become Turkmen citizens.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan proposed holding a Sub-Regional Conference on Statelessness in Ashgabat.Rashid Meredov and Filippo Grandi noted in the conversation the importance of the Ashgabat Declaration of 2012 in addressing the problem of statelessness, and the timeliness of holding the “Ashgabat + 10” Review Conference in 2022 to celebrate the tenth anniversary of adopting the above Declaration.
