Turkmen President Receives China’s Foreign Minister in Ashgabat

President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov at the Oguzhan Presidential Palace Complex in Ashgabat on Tuesday received the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the China Wang Yi, who had arrived in the capital on a two-day official visit the day before, the official media of Turkmenistan reports.

During the meeting, the Head of Turkmenistan and the Chinese Foreign Minister noted the firm intention of the parties to continue to closely interact in a bilateral and multilateral formats within the framework of major international organizations and authoritative regional structures, and stressed that the closeness of views of the two states on key points of international agenda contribute to the establishment of a trusting dialogue that meets mutual interests.

The parties agreed to develop a program of cooperation between Turkmenistan and China for the next five years, which will allow planning and implementing on a systematic basis specific projects and activities in mutually agreed areas of cooperation.

The officials especially noted the relevance of the strategy initiated by Turkmenistan to revive the Great Silk Road and the China’s One Belt - One Road Initiative.

Turkmen President and Chinese Foreign Minister also discussed the joint fight against the coronavirus pandemic. The sides confirmed their intention to continue to closely interact in the medical field, sharing the accumulated positive experience in countering the COVID-19 pandemic.

On the same day, Wang Yi also held a meeting with Turkmen Vice-Premier Serdar Berdimuhamedov, who is also the Co-Chair of the Intergovernmental Turkmen-Chinese Committee for Cooperation.

The visit of the Chinese Foreign Minister to Turkmenistan is part of his five-day tour to Central Asia, which also includes Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
