On 18 April the father of President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov died. The situation in the capital these days remains stable, according to correspondents of “Chronicles of Turkmenistan”.
However, in Turkmenabat, according to sources at “Chronicles of Turkmenistan”, from 12 a.m.to 6 a.m., when the announcement of Myalikguly Berdymukhammedov’s death was not made, the local police were transferred to tightened security regime.
Some 350 law enforcement officers, including those from the neighbouring villages of Lebap velayat, were deployed to the city.
Two investigating officers instead of one were on duty in the velayat and the municipal public prosecutor’s offices.
Military personnel from the local military unit №1001, named after the father of the head of state, were split into groups of three and mobilized to patrol the streets of the city.
They were instructed to ensure order and disperse people from the streets after 10 p.m.
Border patrols have been instructed to close the checkpoint Farap on the border with Uzbekistan, which is used to transport cargo.
The velayat’s NSM office provided overall oversight and supervision.
Before the official announcement of the death of the President’s father at 9 p.m. was made, police officers and military personnel were not aware of the reasons behind the tightened regime.
The tightened security regime will last until 25 April. Before this date all official events in the city and the velayat have been cancelled.
It was previously reported that on 25 April commemoration lunches, referred to as sadaka, will be held.
