President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymukammedov charged deputy Cabinet Chairperson, members of the Mejlis (Parliament) and the Academy of Sciences to draft a special program to improve the Internet and electronic systems in Turkmenistan, the state information agency TDH reports.
According to the plan, cellular provider “Altyn Asyr” is supposed to ensure the widespread provision to Turkmenistan residents of 3G and 4G internet connection and, in the short term, 5G networks.
According to TDH, the average data transmission speed in the capital is currently 20Gb per second, but in the short-term perspective a transport corridor of data transmission with a fivefold speed of 100 Gb/s is scheduled to be set up; in the velayat centres the transmission speed will reach about 40 Gb/s, in the etrap centres data will be transmitted with a speed of up to 10 Gb/s and between etrap centres and farmers’ associations up to 4Gb/s.
ID cards, which in fact replace a domestic passport, will be introduced so that residents of Turkmenistan will use the full range of electronic services provided.
The ID card is an official document identifying a person and which contains personal information including a photo, name, a personal identification number, a signature sample and biometric data.
Furthermore, the objectives of the electronic and IT industry and the e-services system in Turkmenistan envisage aligning domestic tools recording the usage of natural gas, water and electricity (meters comment by Chronicles of Turkmenistan), the Internet equipment, Wi-Fi routers, modems and IP-tuners.
Let us point out that as of today the connection speed in Turkmenistan remains extremely low and the cost of traffic is very expensive.
Turkmenistan ranks 126 in the monthly Internet connection speed rating Speedtest Global Index, which includes 131 countries.
Moreover, many subscribers of the state-run provider “Altyn Asyr” complain about frequent connection disruption, extremely low connection speeds and the unjustified withdrawal of funds from their accounts.
