Turkmenistan extradites 27 prisoners to Iran

On 20 May Turkmenistan and Iran exchanged convicts.Twenty-seven Iranian citizens were extradited from Turkmen prisons.In its turn, three Turkmen residents are expected to be handed over to Turkmenistan by Iran, the information agency Tasnim quoting a representative of Iran’s Foreign Ministry Hassan Qashqavi reports.

The extradition treaty was signed by Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani and his Turkmen counterpart Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov in March 2015. However, this was the first exchange of prisoners between the two nations.

According to the agency IRNA, there are still 280 Iranians kept in Turkmenistan’s prisons and talks on their extradition to Iran are underway.
