Turkmenistan halts trucks en route to Tajikistan for “security reasons”

Cargo trucks en route to Tajikistan have been stopped at the Turkmen border for reasons of security. This wording was quoted in the official letter forward by Turkmenistan to Tajikistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Radio “Ozodi” reports.

A source in Tajikistan’s Ministry of Transportation reported that according to the letter vehicles from Turkey, Uzbekistan and other country also congregated at the border with Turkmenistan.

“Turkmenistan’s authorities are concerned about drug trafficking and for this reason Ashgabat opted for this measure” — the source said. However, it remains unclear what this wording means and when the vehicles will be given a permit to cross the border.

The semi trucks from Iran and Turkey have been unable to cross the Turkmen border to transport cargo to Turkmenistan since late August.

During this time the preparation for the international car rally scheduled to be held from 9 to 14 September, were underway.
